Quantity surveyor: the full picture
Client side and contractor side
Client-side, often called a cost consultant or cost manager, is advisory: estimates, cost planning, procurement advice and certifying payment. Contractor-side is commercial: valuations, variations, subcontract packages and the final account, with margin as the measure.
Contractor-side generally pays more and is more adversarial. Client-side is broader earlier and leads more naturally into project and programme cost management.
RICS, and the routes to it
Chartered status with RICS comes through the Assessment of Professional Competence, which requires structured experience, a diary, a submission and a final assessment. It is the recognised mark in the profession and it changes what you can charge.
Not everyone takes it. A great many effective commercial managers in contracting never did, and progressed on track record instead. It matters most client-side and in consultancy, where the letters are part of what is being bought.
