What gets you hired
Working code you can talk about. A degree helps and is not a requirement at most employers; a portfolio, contributions to something real, or a track record of shipping matters more. The interview is usually a technical exercise plus a conversation about decisions you have made and what you would do differently.
Language matters less than people expect. Teams hire for the ability to learn a codebase, and someone strong in one language is generally trusted to pick up another. What does matter is depth in something, rather than a list of everything you have touched once.
Remote, hybrid and where the work actually is
Development is one of the few fields where the job market genuinely detached from geography, and then partly reattached. Fully remote roles exist and are more competitive than they were; hybrid with two or three days in an office is now the common shape.
That changes how to read a location on an advert. A city named on a technology job is often where the office is rather than where you must be daily, and it is worth asking early rather than assuming either way.
